Things have been great with my internship for the last several weeks! I have learned a variety of new skills, especially with Barnabas Multimedia.

As a part of my internship with Barnabas, I helped to set up and tear down lighting equipment at the North Carolina State Fair. This is something that we do every year – last year during my internship we had a much larger role at the fair with our own tent, but this year the tent was unfortunately discontinued.

However, we are still responsible for lighting equipment in the Got to be NC tent. This involves renting 4 full racks of lighting equipment and assembling everything from scratch. We did this two days before the fair began, with the help of a few friends and workers from the tent.

Then, on Sunday night (the last day of the fair) just before 10pm we began striking the equipment. In total, taking down the equipment took about 3 hours. This was faster than in previous years because we had more help, and many hands certainly make light work.

Through this experience I was able to learn more about how lights are configured for live production events. I also learned about power distribution and the importance of not running too much current through specific equipment.

I am looking forward to helping at the State Fair again next year, and my future internship projects with Barnabas!

Until next time,
— Thomas Armstrong
